In this world, building has been banned by an unholy church that follows scriptures of destruction. At key points in the game you’re tasked with building from huge blueprints. It feels like this sequel is all about making your life easier. Make a dining room and they’ll chomp down on the food come morning, leaving you a smattering of new love hearts for your troubles. Build a kitchen and they’ll turn those crops into recipes. Plonk down a scarecrow on some earth and fence it in and they’ll till the soil, plant your crops, and harvest them when it’s time. Make an armory with some ornamental gear and a chest and they’ll equip themselves for battle. It’s an intoxicating loop.īuild your citizens a toilet by making a small room with a pot and a towel rail and they’ll queue up outside, taking it in turns to deposit some night soil - great for growing fields. You make people happy, hoover up the good vibes, then unlock more stuff to make people even happier. You cater to your citizens’ needs and they reward you with little love hearts that you pick up. It’s as much about the AI as it is the structures you build this time. Though it’s still very much about slamming down blocks or deleting them with your mallet, it feels closer to PS2 classic Dark Cloud in terms of the genre space it lives within. It also adds more, pushing it into city management territory. The first game in the series was a strange hybrid of RPG and Minecraft-style building game, and Dragon Quest Builders 2 expands in both of these areas. On the other hand, convenience is bliss and at least we’ll have more time for video games.ĭragon Quest Builders 2 is coming for your job. It’s scary when you think about it, because capitalism doesn’t support this machine-driven progress. Self-driving cars are here, drones are the soldiers of the future, and VR interfaces will soon allow surgeons to be in many different places over the course of a single day.

There's no first-person mode to admire creations (although the PS4 is at least capable of sharing creations easily enough), and while Minecraft typically felt limitless, in DQ:B, you can only dig down four layers before that typical video game barrier of invisibility stops your pickaxe.
What's not so great is how shallow it feels.
There are plenty of slimes to batter with a choice of weapons, and all the items carry the same names as in the iconic RPG series.Īnd that's great. If you've played a Dragon Quest game before, you'll see familiar enemies and tropes. In comparison to Minecraft's chunky (and iconic styling), to see such a similar game with so much big-game-studio lipstick makes it feel like a very different title.
